Abbott-Holder Say “No” to Texas Jobs
August 15, 2013
Once again, my worst fears are proving true.
Greg Abbott has joined forces with Eric Holder to block the proposed merger of Dallas-based American Airlines with US Airways.
Once again, his action confirms my warning that Greg Abbott is not the conservative he says he is, using the power of his office to interfere with the workings of the free market.
American Airlines sought the merger to move out of bankruptcy. Their plan had the support of the company’s creditors and unions. Conservative economists Douglas Holtz-Eakin and Sam Batkins now believe that Abbott’s and Holder’s effort to “preserve competition” will costs tens of thousands of jobs, most of them in north Texas at American Airlines. The employees who wanted the merger to save their jobs will likely lose them and see reduced benefits down the road.
What evidence does Abbott have that service to smaller airports will be hurt? All airlines need the feeder traffic to their hubs for the longer hauls.
But more to the point, please recognize what we’re seeing here. Conservatives adhere to free market principles. Greg Abbott does not. Helping Eric Holder veto the merger of two companies with plans to revive their business is not the action of someone who would implement conservative economic policies.
