Speaker Boehner has continued to stress that the Senate immigration bill is dead on arrival and that the House will not vote on it. There has been strong support for the House not to pursue this bill because it was filled with pork for liberal groups, fails to actually fix immigration, and gave the Obama administration the ability to pick and choose which parts of the law it wanted to follow. The real question for House Republicans is if they should pass many smaller bills with border security as the main focus or just skip the issue for fear of a conference committee with the Senate.
In addition, a Harris County Republican just knocked the Senate Democrats off their feet. Rep. Steve Stockman (R) has pointed out that the Senate bill is unconstitutional. He said, "Any bill that raises revenue must start in the House. By creating their own amnesty taxes Senate Democrats broke the rules. Senate Democrats were so hell-bent on ramming through a gift to radical political activists they didn’t bother to check if it was even legal." The Congressional Budget Office reviewed the bill and determined it raised revenue by $459 billion which makes this an illegal action by the Senate. Therefore, Speaker Boehner has the legal and constitutional authority to kill the Senate bill with a "blue slip", as the procedure is called, without a vote ever having to take place. Clearly it matters who Harris County sends to Washington. |

Austin remains the center of the debate over HB 2 as the Legislature moves forward. We were thrilled to have former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee and former Pennsylvania Senator Rick Santorum join other Pro-Lifers in rallies at the capitol. Gov. Huckabee told a Monday night rally with Attorney General Abbott, "The idea that one person can own another person is repulsive. With that, so is the idea that one person can kill another. Every life has value." And then yesterday, Sen. Santorum spoke to supporters and blasted the media for their championing of state Sen. Wendy Davis’ (D) filibuster as heroic. He said, "You in the media need to report the truth. The extreme party is the one saying women don’t need sanitary conditions to have this procedure done. You should be reporting on the dirty little secret of what abortion really is." The Texas House passed HB 2 by a vote 96-49 with 4 Democrats joining the Pro-Life side. The Senate begins debate today. Precinct Chair Training & Mentor Program |
|
|

The HCRP has initiated a Precinct Chair Mentor Program which is an important initiative for grassroots development in Harris County. This program will match new and prospective Precinct Chairmen with experienced Precinct Chairs. By having a Mentor assist the new members in learning the ropes more quickly, we expect greater retention and increased productivity.
In addition to the Mentor Program, we will hold a training session for all HCRP volunteers on August 3rd, from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm at King Street Patriots’ meeting hall: 7232 Wynnwood Lane (just inside the Loop at Hempstead Highway.) With a variety of topics to cover, each issue will be discussed briefly followed by in-depth small group sessions that will take place in the weeks after. August 3rd participants will be able to indicate their interests for the topics of those in-depth sessions. We encourage Mentors and Protégés to attend the August 3rd event together and use the training session as a starting point for discussion.
peggyprecinct1. I want to thank Training & Development Committee Chairman Jim McSpadden and the committee for the work they have put into this project. |
